Crime Awareness and Campus Security Act Student Right to Know
This information, required by the Crime Awareness and Campus Security Act of 1990, is provided for your convenience. In addition, the Dean of Students Office publishes the official information for the University both online and in printed format.
Enforcement Authority / Other Police Agencies
University Police Officers are vested with full law enforcement powers under Section 51.203, Texas Education Code. Officers must meet training requirements mandated by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officers Standards and Education, as well as training designed to meet the needs of the university community. As University Police Officers, their police authority extends throughout Denton, Tarrant, and Dallas Counties.
As an active member of the criminal justice system, the University Police Department interacts and cooperates with other law enforcement agencies. Cases are filed with both the Denton Municipal Court and the Denton County District Attorney, depending on the violation. Information may also be given to the Dean of Students for action involving students.
The University requests that all crimes or suspected crimes occurring on campus be reported to the University Police Department as soon as possible.
Reporting Crime or Other Emergencies
Criminal activity and other emergencies occurring on campus should be reported immediately to the UNT Police by telephone, or in person at the police department, or by contacting a police officer on patrol. The Department will:
- Dispatch a police officer or officers to the scene of the reported incident.
- Take a report in person or by telephone.
- Investigate any offense occurring on campus.
- Take action to identify, apprehend, and prosecute the persons responsible.
- Take any other appropriate actions.
Security and Access to Campus Facilities
The University Police provides 24 hour patrol protection of university property, buildings, parking lots, and residence halls. All laws and codes of the state and the United States are enforced on the campus, including regulations the university establishes to administer the campus community.
Officers are responsible for reporting and investigating crimes, issuing traffic citations, responding to medical emergencies, traffic accidents involving university property or injury, reports of fire, as well as other incidents that require police assistance.
Most campus educational facilities are open to the public during business hours. Certain facilities, including buildings, offices, and other areas of the campus may be restricted as to hours or access requirements. These restrictions are posted at these locations.
Access to campus residence buildings operated by University Department of Housing and Residence Life are restricted to residents and their guests.
University Alcohol and Drug Policy
The University of North Texas is committed to a drug free environment, and to the responsible, legal use of alcohol. Specific policies are the Use of Alcohol Policy (UNT Policy 1.2.10), Illegal Drugs and Alcohol Policy (UNT Policy 1.2.12), and the Policy on Drug-Free Workplaces (UNT Policy 16.6).
