One of the outstanding scholarly departments in the South Central area, the English department offers a wide variety of courses which serve various purposes. Some propose to develop skill in written and spoken composition. Others give students a knowledge of literature, and still others are devoted to a study of the English language.

The department prepares future English teachers for positions in high schools and colleges and stimulates cultural insight and appreciation among students from other departments. Literary activities are encouraged.

Members of the English faculty frequently win literary honors and have research investigations published.
