Frosh prospects brighten varsity future

Exciting things are promised for North Texas. This season's freshman basketball team brings talent aplenty to help support varsity play in the Missouri Valley Conference.

Coach Travis Duncan's Eaglets, amid glances of awe mingled with wonder, zoomed to an 11-3 record with an average of 73.6 points per game.

Behind the playmaking of stalwart Albert Jones, who averaged 20.8 points per game and snared an 8.8 rebound mean, the Eaglets rolled past such powers as the SMU Colts, Decatur Baptist College, Arlington State B, Austin College B and Hardin-Simmons B.

Aiding Jones were Gary Shipman, Fred Shulz, Billy Tarrant and Ira Daniels on the boards with Johnnie Locke, Bill Hughs, Dwight Lowery, Buddy Pittman, Leon Miller and Johnny Choice playing out front.

Five straight victories were the Eaglets' until a road trip to Decatur Baptist College dashed any hopes for an undefeated season as the Indians downed the North Texans, 69-61. But revenge was won when the Eaglets upset DBC in Denton 71-67, with jones leading the attack with 21 points. The Eaglets finished the season Feb. 20 with a 91-53 rout over Austin College B team, making it two in a row over the Kangaroos.
