Noah's small track team looks to MVCWith the small squad of only 13 members at the beginning of the season, North Texas' hopes for a team championship in the Missouri Valley track race appeared rather dim. Coach Winton E. (Pop) Noah's compact track team, making fair showings at winter indoor meets, took to the outside tracks with anticipation. In a practice meet with Arlington State College at the beginning of the outdoor season, North Texas' performances began to look better; but in the first dual meet at Fouts Field, the Eagles were overrun 90-55 by Kansas State College of Pittsburg. But this meeting was not all dismal. Sophomore Calvin Bowser set a North Texas record in the javelin with a throw of 221 feet, 7 inches. Ronald Linscomb, another sophomore, erased a 13-year-old broad jump mark with a leap of 24 feet, 2½ inches. In the Southwestern Recreation track and field meet in Fort Worth, the Eagles placed sixth, breaking one school record: Bowser's heave of 222 feet, 10 inches. The next week in the Boulder Olympics, North Texas again failed to be a serious title contender. The Yucca, 1963 |
