An All-Star selection of the AFL's Dallas Texans for the third year, Abner Haynes does something besides play ball: he sings at halftime.

Varsity edges exes in first gridiron show

A second Homecoming in one year?

The occasion could easily have been called this when a deluge of exes descended upon the North Texas campus for the first Eagle varsity-alumni football contest.

Headlined by professional stars such as Abner Haynes of the Dallas Texans, Arthur Perkins of the Los Angeles Ram, Garland Warren of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and Ray Renfro of the Cleveland Browns, the affair was considered by NTSU athletic officials as a success - one they hope to continue.

And the game itself could not have been any more exciting. Down on the 1-yard line with 40 seconds to go, the exes fumbled and the varsity recovered, earning Coach Odus Mitchell's 1963 Eagle varsity a narrow 27-22 victory.

Said Perkins after the exes' defeat, "I'll okay any year they have a game."
