Shocking Win Extends Homecoming String

Seven straight Homecoming Day victories.

Odus Mitchell, in his 18th season as head coach at NTSU, is about to boast of this feat as his oft-beaten Eagles came alive to edge the University of Wichita 7-3 to keep his Homecoming victory streak intact.

A sun-drenched crowd of 14,000 watched the underdog Eagles respond with a last-minute touchdown to overcome the Shockers. A tough defense and a clicking offense under the direction of quarterback Billy Ryan were credited for the win.

With one minute and 48 seconds remaining, Ryan passed to halfback A. D. Whitfield, who plowed through from the 11 for the winning tally. But the Shockers refused to accept defeat as the Kansas team roared downfield to threaten the Eagles in the final seconds. Defensive safety Tim Falgout preserved the Eagles' lead by intercepting a pass in the NT end zone to halt Wishita's final threat.
