From left, John Love and Burkley Harkless In 1965, the Eagles were Missouri Valley Conference Co-Champions. Middle guard Burkley Harkless and flanker John Love were All-Conference picks that year. In 1966, four African American football players were among seven North Texas Eagles named to the Associated Press All-Conference team. Harkless and Love were unanimous choices, and the only unanimous choices for the offensive team. Love, who was known more for speed than size, set nine school records in 1966 and led the nation when he caught 68 passes for 1130 yards. He went on to play for the Washington Redskins and was named to the North Texas Hall of Fame in 1992. Harkless led the team in tackles. He was named Lineman of the Year for the conference. Harkless led North Texas in tackles and was rated a top-notch lineman with strength and speed. |
