John Thomas "J.T." Smith, who joined the Eagles in 1974, was an outstanding defensive back who gained more than 1,000 yards in punt interception and kick-off returns.

After leaving North Texas, Smith had an all-star career with the Kansas City Chiefs and Arizona Cardinals. He was All-Pro in 1980 and 1988 and is the Chiefs' all-time leader in punt returns. He was named to the North Texas Hall of Fame in 1991.
