North Texas added swimming and diving to women's varsity sports in 1998. The next year, Charlene McClain joined the team, becoming the first African American at the university to participate in swimming.

McClain holds the second-highest career record in the 50-yard butterfly and the third-highest career record in the 50-yard freestyle.
