MathTalk and Scientific Notebook are applications available in the Adaptive Lab for use with Dragon Naturally Speaking. Both applications perform powerful calculation and graphing functions all activated using voice commands. We have the manuals for MathTalk and Scientific Notebook available next to the adaptive machines in the lab.
MathTalk and Scientific Notebook require some setup in order to work properly with Dragon Naturally Speaking. Before performing the setup instructions below, be sure that you have set up DNS first and created your initial user files. The tutorial about how to do this is posted here.
If you have any questions about setting up these applications, please ask the lab consultants to help you. They have been specially trained in this software use. For intensive work in MathTalk and Scientific Notebook, please refer to the manuals.
1. With NaturallySpeaking up, in the DragonBar, click Tools, Command Browser.
2. In the Command Browser, click the "Custom" tab.
3. Click on Import. With the cursor in "Look In", use "Browse" to select c:\Program Files\Dragon\mathtalk.
4. Select/highlight math81902f.dat (this will be the only file in the folder) and click "Open".
5. This will open the ImportingMyCommands dialog box. Click "Import" to import the Mathtalk command files.
6. When asked "Do you want to overwrite it with the imported command?", click "Yes to All".
7. To "Successfully Imported MyCommands" in the ImportingMyCommands dialog box, click OK.
8. Click Naturally Speaking on the DragonBar. Then click "Save User Files". Exit the Command Browser.
9. Now copy the five (5) .tex files from c:\Program Files\Scientific Notebook\Train to c:\Program Files\Scientific Notebook\Docs. Go to Windows Explorer. Go to c:\Program Files\Scientific Notebook\Train, highlight the five .tex files (NSalgebra.tex, NSprealgebra.tex, NStrig.tex, NScalculus.tex, and NSstatTrain.tex) and copy. (You may do this one file at a time, or you may copy all 5 at one time and then paste all 5 at one time). Then go to c:\Program Files\Scientific Notebook\Docs and paste.
1. From the Desktop, bring up Dragon Naturally Speaking and click on your user voice. Then say "run math" which will bring up Scientific Notebook. For maximum performance, we recommend only having these two programs running.
2. Say "train initial commands" to bring up the Initial Command training document. Follow the instructions for training the 48 commands - be sure to say "save user files" to save your training.
3. Go to the MathTalk manual and in the MathTalk NatSpeak Tutorial, proceed to the Training Module for the level of math you wish: MathTalk for Pre-algebra, MathTalk for Calculus etc. You may wish to do several of these training modules. These modules are designed to quickly acquaint the user with available commands, combinations of commands, and commands which are used throughout MathTalk.
4. Next say "new file" and begin applying MathTalk to creating your work!
Both Dragon Naturally Speaking and MathTalk use the International Alphabet to convey the letters of the alphabet. For example, instead of saying the letter "z", you should say "zulu". For an uppercase letter, you would say "cap zulu" which would give you the letter "Z".
