JAWS

Stands for Job Access With Speech. It is a screen-reading software for blind and/or visually impared users. The software can output text to speech or to a braille display/keyboard like in the isolation room.

Availability: On all lab stations. Windows only.


MAGic

MAGic

A screen magnification & contrast software. It also enhances user interface elements such as cursors, mouse pointer and color.

Availability: On all lab stations. Windows only.


NVDA

NVDA

stands for NonVisual Desktop Access. It is an open-source, free screen-reading software for the blind that is similar to JAWS, but also keep tracks of mouse travels. It can also output to a braille display/keyboard.

Kurzweil Firefly

Firefly

It is a text to speech web application for reading documents. It is accessible through this link. Users will have to login in order to use the app. If they do not have one, the ODA office has generously provided ACS Lab with an account. Firefly can only read a specific file format. A .KES file. If you have a .PDF file, it will have to be converted using Kurzweil 3000. We don't have this software, but the UNT Office of Disability does. Please visit this department to get the file converted, otherwise, upload your .KES file to the website. UPDATE: Firefly now accepts Microsoft Word file formats, PDF, and plain text files.

Availability: On all lab stations. Windows or Mac (via the web browser). Use the isolation rooms to use computer speakers, otherwise, please use headphones.


Dragon Naturally Speaking 12

Dragon Naturally Speaking

A software that translates your voice into commands or text in a document. Because this software requires you to speak aloud, microphone or headset is required.

Availability: In the isolation rooms. Windows only. Headsets are available upon request.


Dragon Dictate 3

Dragon Dictate

A software that translates your voice into commands or text in a document. Because this software requires you to speak aloud, microphone or headset is required.

Availability: In the isolation rooms. Mac OS X only. Headsets are available upon request.

Hardware


Braille Printer
Braille Printer

A device capable of printing documents in braille. Can only be used along-side a software called iBPrint that could send regular text-based document into a a physical braille document.

Availability: In the isolation rooms, Windows Only. Please ask lab manager for assistance.


Braille Display and Keyboard
Braille Keyboard

A device capable of displaying user interface elements into braille. It is used along-side the JAWS software on Windows.

Availability: In the isolation rooms, Windows Only. Please ask lab manager for assistance.

Height-Adjustable Tables

A few tables around the lab and in the 2 isolation rooms are height adjustable to accomodate wheel chair access. Please ask the lab staff for assistance.


Isolation Rooms
Isolation Room

The isolation rooms are available for any students with adaptive needs. Each room is equipped with a single station iMac, scanner, sound-enabled speakers, and a USB microphone.
