Information about Health and Medical Insurance for International students at UNT

We care about your health. We hope you are not sick and that you never need to see a doctor while you are a student here at UNT.  However, you may get sick. At some time during your stay in Denton you will probably need to get medicine from a pharmacy or visit a doctor for your health care. What should I
do if I get sick
or if am injured?

  • What to do if you become sick or are injured

  1. Go FIRST to the UNT Student Health and Wellness Center (SHWC) for treatment. Nearly all insurance companies require you to go the SHWC unless it is closed, you are not in Denton, or the medical condition is an emergency.
  2. Carry your insurance identification card at all times.
  3. Claim deadline: Make your “claim” for the Health (medical) Insurance company to pay your medical expenses within 20 days of the injury or the first treatment for sickness.
  4. Do NOT accept public health care. Non-immigrant students jeopardize their status if they accept any form of free public medical care in the U.S. including medical care for pregnancy or maternity.
  • If you do become sick or injured in the U.S., health care is not affordable without medical insurance to help pay the costs.

  • Excellent medical care, a pharmacy, wellness programs, and other health care information all are available at the UNT Student Health and Wellness Center

  • OFFICIAL UNT POLICY

Since 1982, UNT has had a policy requiring all international students to have medical insurance.

All international students and scholars holding non-immigrant visas must carry UNT-approved health insurance coverage during the entire period of their UNT residence.  Residence is defined as that continuous period from initial orientation and enrollment or employment, including  holidays, through graduation or final separation from the university.

International students are automatically charged for the UNT-offered policy each semester at registration and must provide proof of comparable insurance by the established deadline at International Advising to avoid purchasing the UNT-offered policy.  International scholars must

Demonstrate acceptable insurance coverage at International Advising during their initial

Orientation session.  (UNT Policy Manual:  Vol. 3, Number 18.1.7)

  • INFORMATION ABOUT THE UNT MEDICAL INSURANCE PLAN

The UNT Medical Insurance plan brochure is available at:

1. The UNT Student Health and Wellness Center

2. The International Welcome Center, Kendall Hall, Room 103

*See the Chart of Costs and Dates – 2006-2007 for the UNT Medical Insurance plan.

All UNT and IELI international students are automatically charged for the UNT medical insurance plan every semester. It a student wants to buy the UNT medical insurance, the student takes no further action beyond paying for the insurance change on the tuition/fees bill.

If a student does not want to buy the UNT medical insurance, the student must follow the steps that follow to get a "waiver."
