Q
|
What kinds
of study abroad programs are available?
|
| A |
Short-term
(mini-mester and summer session); semester-long; and
year-long opportunities are available. |
| |
Q
|
Isn't it awfully expensive to study abroad?
|
| A |
Study abroad can be done at UNT prices! In
addition, financial aid and scholarships are available.
Reciprocal exchanges, which
allow UNT students
to study in 37 countries for a semester or a year, are the least expensive way to study
abroad. Outgoing students pay tuition and fees at UNT just as if they would on the
Denton campus; all other costs (housing, meals) are paid at the host university. The main
additional costs are airfare and traveling money.

Q
|
Can graduate students
study abroad?
|
| A |
Yes! Please note, though, that it can be a
bit more complicated to fit study abroad into a graduate degree. Please contact the SAC to
talk about your wishes for an international education experience.
|
| |
Q
|
Can international students
study abroad?
|
| A |
Yes. Study abroad is for EVERY
UNT student. Please let the SAC know at least 6 months before your program what non-US citizenship you hold, so that we
can help you determine what your special visa requirements may be.
|
| |
Q
|
Can non-traditional age students,
students with children,
or students with disabilities study abroad?
|
| A |
We
attempt to accommodate all students interested in studying
abroad. Please don't hesitate to let us know
about your special circumstances. We are committed to making an international experience
available to all students, and we'll be happy to advise individually to identify the best
program for a particular student (for instance, a site with child care available, or with
wheelchair-accessible facilities.)
|
| |
Q
|
Can non-UNT students
participate in UNT study abroad programs?
|
| A |
Yes, in most cases; however, any
participant in a UNT program MUST be enrolled at UNT for the academic term during the time
of the program. For participation in a summer program, contact the program's faculty
leader to inquire. Exchange programs are open only to UNT students. |
| |
Q
|
Is financial aid applicable to study abroad?
|
| A |
Yes,
all regular financial aid applies except for work study. It is simplest to do this if you are
attending a UNT program, but there is a way to handle non-UNT programs also. The SAC will
work with you and the Financial Aid Office to have your need level re-assessed and your
federal and state financial aid made available.
|
| |
Q
|
What is the IEFS?
|
| A |
Each semester, every student pays
$4 for
an International Education Fee.
This fee appears on the UNT billing statement. EVERY PENNY of the IEF money is deposited
into an account which may only be used for student scholarships. At UNT, the funds are
credited directly to the student's UNT account.
Only students that have been enrolled at UNT during the last
twelve months may be eligible for this scholarship. Scholarships
and amounts are re-evaluated each calendar year and may vary in
amount

| |
Q
|
Is there a grade-point average requirement to study abroad?
|
| A |
For exchange programs (semester or year),
students must have a minimum 3.0. For exchange programs in Mexico, students should have a
2.75. For other programs, please check with the SAC for specific requirements.
|
| |
Q
|
I'm just a little bit below
that GPA. Can I still be considered for the program?
|
| A |
It never hurts to ask! The answer will be
different for different programs. |
| |
Q
|
UNT doesn't offer the program / country / subject area that I want.
What are my options?
|
| A |
Come to the Study Abroad Center and look
through our materials! We have information on thousands and thousands of international
education programs offered by other US institutions and foreign schools. We can help you
with the process of choosing a program, receiving your financial aid, and with having your
credits.
