2008 CSCC Conference

The Council for the Study of Community Colleges (CSCC) will be holding its fiftieth conference this year in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on April 4 and 5, 2008. The theme of this year’s conference is “Celebrating the past, Creating the future.” Patsy Fulton-Calkins, Ph.D., will be presenting at CSCC this year. Her presentation is entitled “Community College Directions for 2010 and Beyond: Focus on Core Curriculum and Delivery Methods,” and will be addressing the most effective curriculum for graduate students preparing for careers in the community college, both as teachers and administrators, and delivery methods that provide maximum flexibility consistent with educational excellence.

2008 AACC Conference

The American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) will be holding its 88th annual convention in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on April 5-8, 2008. The theme of this year’s conference is “Make it happen!” This year, the AACC is partnering with the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society, an honor society for students at community colleges. Speakers include Amy Tan, author of the Joy Luck Club, Gaston Caperton, President of the College Board and former Governor of West Virginia, and Jehan Sadat, former Egyptian First Lady and holder of the Anwar Sadat Chair for Peace and Development at the University of Maryland.

2008 NISOD Conference

The National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development (NISOD) was established in 1978 at the University of Texas in Austin. Each year a conference dedicated to celebrating teaching and leadership is held in Austin. The 2008 conference was held on May 25 – 28 at the Austin Convention Center. The theme for the 2008 conference is “Bridges to Learning.” This year, there are many presentations, workshops and discussions of interest to the community college community. They are “Effective strategies for attracting, retaining, and graduating African American males in Community Colleges,” which will be moderated by Walter Bumphus, “The creative community college,” which will be led by John E. Roueche, M. Melissa Richardson, Phillip W. Neal, and Suanne D. Roueche, and an all day workshop led by the Community College Survey of Student Engagement (CCSSE).

Additionally, there will be a presentation on the U. S. Department of Education’s Community College Initiatives, which will be led by Pat Stanley, the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Community Colleges and Gail Schwartz, Senior Advisor, Office of Vocational and Adult Education (OVAE) and a discussion on National Science Foundation Funding Opportunities for Community Colleges and Partnerships, with a special focus on funding available in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

Fred Hills, a doctoral student in the Higher Education Administration graduate program at UNT who is specializing in Community College Leadership, will be presenting at NISOD this year. His presentation is entitled “Bad online instruction: How it made me a better instructor.” Fred is presenting with his colleague from McLennan Community College, Richard Leslie.

Greenleaf 2008 Conference

The Greenleaf Center for Servant-Leadership was established to honor the work and life of Robert K. Greenleaf (1904-1990). Greenleaf founded the Center for Applied Ethics (now the Robert K. Greenleaf Center for Servant-Leadership) and his writings on the servant-leadership theme are nationally known. A collection of his works is printed in a book entitled On Becoming A Servant-Leader. A conference focusing on the importance of servant leadership in both business and education will be held June 5-7, 2008, in Indianapolis, Indiana. This conference provides an opportunity for graduate students to learn the tenets of servant leadership and to interact with professionals who consistently use these tenets in their professional and personal lives.

This year’s featured speakers are Dr. John Izzo, a best-selling author and speaker who has written extensively on leadership values and integrity in the workplace, Dr. James Joseph, former U.S. Ambassador to South Africa, and founder of the United States-Southern Africa Center for Leadership and Public Values at Duke University and the University of Cape Town, Michael Jones, a leadership consultant who concentrates on the relationship between servant leadership, artistry, and community, Richard H. McLure, who has extensive experience with corporate leadership, and Dr. Fons Trompenaars, who will be speaking about servant leadership across cultures.

6th Annual UNT Transfer Student Conference

The Institute for the Study of Transfer Students, offered by the University of North Texas, held its 6th Annual Transfer Conference on January 23-25, 2008. This year’s feature presentations include Response of the States to Transfer Issues, The European Model for Higher Education, and Building the Yellow Brick Road to Transfer Success: Creating Successful Pathways to predictable Transfers. There were also two research grant awards given out. The first was to Scott Peska, from Northern Illinois University, and Debra Bragg, from the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, for their work entitled “Timing is Everything: A Comparative Study of the Adjustment of Fall and Mid-year Community College Transfer Students at a Public Four-Year University.” The second award was given to Charlene Stinard and Bernadette Jungblut, from the University of Central Florida, for their work entitled “University and Community College Collaboration in Pre-admission Academic Advising: Improving Students’ Transition to the University and Progress to Graduation.”

Fall 2007 Community college cognate, Doctoral Student Meet-n-Greet Session at UNT campus

On Thursday, November 8th, the Bill J. Priest Center hosted a session for Doctoral students in the Community College Cognate area and their spouses, entitled “Meet, Greet, and Learn" beginning at 6:00 p.m. and continuing until 9:00 p.m. at the Gateway Center at UNT.

This year's speakers were Dr. Jesse Jones, director of the North Texas Community College Consortium, Denise Davis, project director for the Early College High School Initiative, Marc Valerin, president of the Association for Graduate Students in Higher Education, Princess Jackson, and Czarina Reyes, a Community College graduate student and faculty in the Mathematics Department at Brookhaven College. Dr. Jesse Jones talked about the CLARA (Consortium Leadership and Renewal Academy) program, Denise Davis talked about the role of the community college in early college high school, Marc Valerin and princess Jackson talked about the different ways that AGSHE can help students and Czarina Reyes talked about successfully managing qualifying exams and the dissertation process.
