The State of Texas was one of
six state governments honored recently by CIO magazine, a
national publication for information executives. According to Tech
Times, the Department
of Information Resources (DIR) Newsletter (Vol.5, No. 5), DIR was
listed on the magazine's "honor roll" as one of the top government
agencies committed to customer service.
In its list of Texas' accomplishments, CIO magazine
highlighted a BBS managed
by the Comptroller of Public Accounts. "Window on State Government," as
the BBS is called, provides on-line data on the state's economy,
population statistics, employment forecasiting, and sales tax reports to
Texas citizens.
The Window on the State Government BBS can be accessed by calling
1-800-227-8392. The BBS has twelve phone lines, with four 14.4 and
eight 9,600 baud modems. You can find a lot of useful information on
this BBS, including a complete index of tax forms, and an up-to-date
file on the latest winning lottery numbers, previous winning
combinations, and an analysis of frequencies of winning numbers. One of
the best features of the BBS is the ability to dial out to other
Government BBSs (this is an item on one of the menus). Other BBSs
available include the Texas
Parks and Wildlife BBS, The Texas Marketplace, run by the Department of Commerce, and the Texas Cancer Center.
