Regarding ADR Classes
1. What programs of study are offered in the field of mediation and negotiation?
The Institute of Applied Economics at the University of North Texas offers several classes in mediation and negotiation. These classes are grouped below by program and certificate:
Undergraduate Minor (21 hours of coursework)
Required Courses (12 hours):
COMM 3320 – Communication and Conflict Management (or approved substitute)
AECO 4000 – Mediation (Prerequisite for other courses)
AECO 4120 – Negotiation and Dispute Resolution
AECO 4420 – Practicum in Mediation and Dispute Resolution (Prerequisite: AECO 4000 strictly enforced)
Electives (9 hours):
PSYC 3640 – Psychological Factors in Marital Adjustment
BLAW 2000 – Personal Law
MGMT 3870 – Management Skills and Problem Solving
AECO 4020 – Workplace ADR
AECO 4040 – Crisis Intervention
AECO 4010 – Family Mediation
CJUS 3210 – Judicial and Legal Systems
NOTE: New classes are being developed by AECO and may be offered as electives. Students should discuss this with Dr. McKee.
Mediation Certificate* (6 hours of coursework)
AECO 4000 – Mediation
AECO 4420 – Practicum in Mediation and Dispute Resolution (Prerequisite: AECO 4000 strictly enforced.)
*This program of study meets the current State of Texas requirements for certification as a mediator.
Family Mediation Certificate** (9 hours of coursework)
AECO 4000 – Mediation
AECO 4420 – Practicum in Mediation and Dispute Resolution (Prerequisite: AECO 4000 strictly enforced.)
AECO 4010 – Family Mediation (Prerequisite: AECO 4000 strictly enforced.)
**This program of study meets the current State of Texas requirements for certification as a family mediator.
ADR Certificate (12 hours of course work)

2. When are the classes offered?
These classes are offered during all semesters. During one calendar year, the Institute of Applied Economics offers all AECO classes at least once. Most classes meet at night or over several weekends. Click here for current ADR class offerings.

3. What do I have to do to enroll in these classes?
To take these classes, you must be a student at UNT. If you are currently taking classes at UNT, then you simply enroll for the class of your choice.
If you are not currently a student at UNT, then you must apply for admission to UNT by completing an application form and providing all required supporting documents. You will be notified by the Admissions Office once your application is approved. More information about admission to UNT can be found at http://www.unt.edu/admissions.htm

Once you are admitted as a student, you must attend an orientation session where you will be given instructions on how to register for classes. Also, see the current Schedule of Classes for registration information.
4. What will it cost to take these courses?

5. How do I register for classes?

6. I am a graduate student. Can I receive graduate credit for these classes?
Graduate classes begin at the 5xxx level. The classes listed above all show the undergraduate course numbers. With the exception of Mediation Practicum, the classes listed above all have a corresponding 5xxx section listed in the Schedule of Classes. You should locate the corresponding 5050 class that has the course you want as the COURSE TOPIC and register for that AECO 5050 section it to receive graduate credit. For example, in spring 2010 if you want to take Negotiation at the graduate level, you would register for AECO 5050.003. If you register for AECO 4120.001, then you will not receive graduate credit for the Negotiation class.
If you need to take the Mediation Practicum for graduate credit, please contact Dr. McKee for a special problem section and class permission number.
NOTE: You must register for the 5xxx classes at the beginning of the semester. You cannot be transferred into the 5xxx class after the first week of a semester. It is your responsibility to ensure that you are enrolled in the proper class.
