Degree Requirements
The master's degree program prepares students for professional careers in the field of gerontology. The 45-46 semester hour program includes 12 semester hours of core courses in aging, 30-33 semester hours of track-related coursework, and 3-6 semester hours of credit for an internship in a facility or agency serving older people. A prerequisite for the program is 3 hours of social gerontology; this may be taken concurrently with courses applying to the degree.
Three majors are available; administration of long-term care and retirement facilities (ADLR), administration of aging organizations (ADAO), and applied gerontology (AGER). The ADLR curriculum prepares students to become administrators of skilled nursing facilities, continuing care retirement communities, assisted living facilities, home health care agencies, and retirement housing properties. An additional prerequisite for this major is 6 hours of undergraduate accounting. The ADAO program prepares students for positions in many settings, including adult protective service agencies, advocacy groups for older adults, charitable organizations, corporate retirement programs, government offices on aging at all levels, home health care agencies, senior centers, and others. The AGER major is designed both for individuals who are already working in the field of aging and for students with highly individualized interests and career plans. It allows the selection of supporting courses in such areas as adult education, health promotion, psychology, public administration, recreation, sociology, and others.
