Course Descriptions

Core Course I: Administering the Retirement Housing Community

This course focuses on the theories and principles of retirement housing management. It stands apart from other management and administration training programs by specifically focusing on the unique aspects of managing a human services organization serving an elderly population, and emphasizes on management and leadership. Key course components include philosophy of housing management, personnel development and administration, facility governance, strategic planning, marketing, the Fair Housing Act, Section 504, the Americans with Disabilities Act, ethics, and legal and regulatory issues.

Core Course II: Management and the Aging Resident

Topics include an overview of the aging process, physical and psychosocial needs of older persons, hospitality and environmental constraints, and opportunities that confront the administrator in the planning, development, and implementation of retirement housing services. This course also integrates gerontological and management principles with physical environment considerations addressed in Core Courses I and III in order to provide a comprehensive understanding of retirement housing administration and of the retirement community as a microcosm of the community at large.

Core Course III: Managing the Financial and Physical Environments

This course focuses on the skills needed to monitor the financial solvency of the retirement community and maintain the physical plant. It includes a review of basic accounting principles, as well as an in-depth look at critical budgeting, financing, and operations using case studies. Environmental design, asset management and security planning, and dining services are also covered to ensure that the administrator is well versed in all aspects of facility management.
