DENTON (UNT), Texas -- A senior from Argyle and a senior from West are the
winners of the 2007-2008 Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender and Ally (GLBTA)
Scholarship in Honor of Mary Finley and Dan Emenheiser, awarded by the
University of North Texas' Division of Equity and Diversity. This year's scholarship recipients are Yasmin Furtick, senior English major from Argyle, and Treavor Wagoner-Knox, a senior communications design major from the central Texas city of West. The scholarships are given to a student who is either a new, transfer or continuing undergraduate student at UNT. This is the third year that the Division of Equity and Diversity has awarded the scholarship, but it is the first year that there have been two recipients. Furtick says, "I learned about the scholarship from an e-mail sent by the Division of Equity and Diversity. I've taken part in some GLBTA events in the area, and wanted to expand my involvement." Wagoner-Knox says, "I thought the scholarship would be a great opportunity to get involved in the GLBTA community at UNT. By working with the Division of Equity and Diversity as a result of this scholarship, I can do that." The GLBTA scholarship was endowed in December 2004 by then-UNT staff member Sue Young. It is named in honor of Mary Finley, the assistant director of the UNT University Union and a 20+ year UNT staff member, and the late Dan Emenheiser, UNT's director of diversity education who died in June 2006. Finley and Emenheiser co-founded the UNT Ally program in 1999. It helps to create an environment free of discrimination and harassment for the gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and ally community on the University of North Texas campus. Donations to the scholarship, which are tax deductible, can be made to the UNT Foundation by referencing the GLBTA Finley/Emenheiser Scholarship.
