Attendance at all Section meetings is required. Your presence will be noted and your participation will be evaluated.

Quizzes

Unannounced quizzes will be given to encourage you to keep up to date on skills and reading, and to give you relatively painless practice for the exams. These cannot be made up in the event that you are late or absent. 

Essay Assignments

There are two 3-5 page essays 
Essay 1. Languages and Dialects. . . . . . . DUE November 4 
Compare a dialect of English (other than the one spoken in this class) or a non-English language you speak fluently to standard (middle-class, academic, adult, California) English 

Include comments on the following features:

Essay 2. Conversation Observation. . . . . . . DUE November 25 
Observe and describe a conversation between two or three people. It may be a live conversation (observed, audio/video taped) or perfomed (TV, video). Details to be given in class by Nov 6. 

typed, 12 point, 1 inch margins all sides, 1.5 or double spaced, well proofed: no errors, 10% of grade lost per calendar day late

Exams will include problems, short answers, and essay questions.

All assigned readings are to be completed before the class for which they are listed, so that you will have background on the lecture, and will be ready with questions. Pay particular attention to terms you may not be familiar with. The Encyclopedia has an extensive glossary.
