ISRAEL GARCÍA 

Senior, Sociology, Political Science, and Ethnic Studies

Mentor: Dr. Mariela Nuñez-Janes
Research: Sí Se Puede: Latino Youth Immigration Activism in North Dallas

Israel’s research interests include: social justice, social equality, social stratification and exploring the factors that contribute to the perpetuation of existing inequalities. Israel hopes to go on to graduate school and earn a doctoral degree in Sociology.


CHRISTIE GARDNER

Junior, Psychology, minor in Spanish

Research: The Role of Beliefs in Self Treatment of Insomnia and Self Perceived Anxiety In College Students

Christie’s research interests include: the inter-relationship of insomnia and anxiety, beliefs and behaviors of people with insomnia and anxiety, the effects of cultural differences and maladaptive behaviors on people with insomnia and anxiety. Christie hopes to go on to graduate school and earn a doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology.



KEVIN IMAFUKU

Junior, Geography, East Asian Studies & Japanese, minor in Biology Pennsylvania State Univeristy
Mentor:Dr. Lisa Nagaoka
Research: An Ethnobotanical Investigation of the Origins of the Sacred Nature and Religious Uses of the Evergreen Shrub *Cleyera japonica* in the Native Japanese Religion, Shinto

Kevin’s research interests include: ethnobiology, folk and alternative medicine; historical anthropology, archaeological theories, folklore, cultural geography and linguistics. Kevin hopes to continue research after graduate school. He plans on obtaining a Ph.D. in Anthropology and becoming a professor of anthropology and geography.



GWENNORA (NORA) LEWIS

Senior, General Studies, minors in Art History, History & Sociology
University of North Texas
Mentor: Dr. George Yancey

Research: White Shadows: The Effects of Bearing Black And White Biracial Children on the Racial and Personal Identities of White Mothers

Nora’s research interests include: issues of race and ethnicity, education of minority students, racism in the GLBT community and cases and effects of residential segregation. She hopes to go on to graduate school and earn a doctoral degree in Sociology.


 

BRANDIE MASSENGALE

Senior, Anthropology
University of North Texas
Mentor: Dr. Ann Jordan
Research: Cherokee Women and Colonization: Culture Change and Continuity

Brandie’s research interests include: feminist anthropology, spiritual and religious beliefs, gender studies and the effects of European colonialization on the political and religious roles of Native American Women. She hopes to go on to graduate school and earn a doctoral degree in Cultural Anthropology.

 

RANDOLPH NOISETTE

Junior, Anthropology & Global Black Studies
Purchase College State University of New York
Mentors: Dr. Beverly Davenport & Pamela O. Brown, MS

Research: Political Consciousness in Hip Hop and Its Influence on Political Views of Its African American Audience Randolph’s research interests include: Haitian immigrant racial identity, cultural pluralism in politics, ideas of masculinity and the influence of radical black organizations on Black Nationalist movement. He hopes to go on to graduate school at the New School for Social Research and earn a doctoral degree in Anthropology.


ESTHER REYES

Senior, Social Work
Baylor University
Mentor: Dr. Mariela Nuñez-Janes
Research: Sí Se Puede: Latino Youth Immigration Activism in North Dallas

Esther’s research intrests include: immigration issues, early childhood education, social and economic development, health issues of low-income families and childhood obesity. She hopes to go on to graduate school and pursue a dual Master’s degree in Social Work and Law.



VALESSA ST. PIERRE

Senior, Biological Anthropology & Psychology
Binghampton University
Mentor: Dr. Beverly Davenport
Research: Influences on Black Women’s Decisions To Alter Their Hair Styles

Valessa’s research interests include: the effects of stereotypes on perceptions of self, the effects of media on perceptions of reality, physical attractiveness and ways people formalize ideas of dominant cultures.  She hopes to go on to graduate school and earn a doctoral degree in Cultural Anthropology.
