The practicum is the major independent project that students undertake in order to complete the master in applied anthropology. It involves doing work that will be of practical benefit to some organization or agency. Students must design and carry out a project that utilizes the skills in applied anthropology that they gained through their master's program coursework. The project has two kinds of outcomes:

A practical application that benefits the organization or agency that is their client
A report to the department of anthropology, submitted both as a written document and a verbal presentation

The practicum is similar to a traditional master's thesis in that it represents a substantial effort on the student's part. It is different in that the student's project will always be directed toward the needs of a client.

Planning the Practicum
The practicum is structured around three courses:

ANTH 5050 Pre-Practicum: Problems and Cases in Applied  Anthropology
This is an overview of applied anthropology and a practical skills course which includes students' identification of a client and project. It is offered every spring, and should be taken in the student's first year.

ANTH 5800 Practicum I
Student work on their project under the supervision of a faculty member. For the project as a whole, they must work a minimum of 96 hours. They should accomplish as many hours as possible during Practicum I; they can finish the hours under Practicum II.

APAN 5810 Practicum II
Students finish up any remaining hours of work. They deliver their findings to the client. They also prepare a written report and a verbal presentation for the department of anthropology.

Some requirements for the project:

The client may not be affiliated with UNT. Some early practicums were projects
for the anthropology department, but this is no longer an option.

Volunteer work with a community or ethnic group will not count unless the
student is working for an established entity and reports to a designated individual in that entity.

For more detailed information on the Practicum, see our Graduate Student Handbook (.pdf).
