Program Admission
There are regulations governing the process of studying for graduate degrees (e.g., maximum registration, transfer credits). These regulations are stated in the Graduate Catalog. This catalog is available on line at www.unt.edu/catalogs. It is the responsibility of the study to learn and observe all requirements of the degree they seek.
Student Seeking a Master’s Degree
- Hold a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution.
- Meet the graduate admission requirements of the Toulouse School of Graduate Studies as outlined in the Graduate Catalog. Admission to Special Education is also needed after admission to the Graduate School is achieved. Program admission is contingent upon submission by the student and review by the program of a complete application packet.
- A complete Special Education Program application includes ALL of the following:
- Two Letters of Recommendation from individuals who can give evidence of the candidate’s critical thinking ability in order to successfully engage in graduate studies.
- Submission of GRE scores (V, Q, AW) is required. There is no required minimum GRE score used for admission into the Graduate Special Education Program. Most successful applicants to the program in special education have a Verbal GRE score of 450 or higher, a Quantitative GRE score of 400 or higher, and an Analytical Writing GRE score of 4.0 or better.
- Resume’ or Vita that includes the candidate’s previous work and educational experiences, including degrees held and teaching certifications.
- Personal Statement from the candidate stating his/her goals and rationale for applying to the special education program and a brief description of their career and research expectations with regard to work and further education. Candidates should describe their current reading, critical thinking, and writing and mathematical skills; and their relevant educational experiences and strengths. Candidates should also assess their own ability to work independently, and discuss their educational philosophies and future goal.
Students Seeking Admission as Non-Degree Seeking or Certification Only
A student who is admitted to non-degree or certification-only status has no assurance that work completed under this status will be applicable toward degree requirements should he/she subsequently be admitted to a degree program at the University of North Texas. Students Seeking the Doctoral Degree
- Admission to the doctoral program in special education takes into consideration several factors deemed important for success in graduate studies. No single factor determines an individual's eligibility for admission. Applications for students who meet initial admission standards are forwarded to the Special Education Federation Admissions Committee for review. Initial acceptance into the doctoral program is contingent upon the applicant meeting the following program admission standards:
- Special Education Federation Written Admissions Examination. Applicants must successfully complete the written admissions examination within their first 12 hours of course work to receive unconditional admission. The admissions examination is a diagnostic and screening procedure that formally assesses the student’s background preparation in special education and the student’s suitability for doctoral studies. The two-hour written examination that focuses on general trends and issues in special education.
Reasonable accommodations will be made to allow students with disabilities to take the admissions examination. The student should discuss individual needs the chair of the advisory committee to arrange needed accommodations.
- Approval of the Special Education Federation
- Admissions Committee and majority approval by the UNT Special Education faculty. A program chairperson will be assigned from the Special Education faculty. The advisor will assist the student with the selection of courses for the first semester and the preliminary examination procedure.
If the applicant is deficient in any of the above areas, an appeal may be made to the Special Education Federation Admissions Committee. In addition to the listed criteria, the committee may consider the applicant's related work experience, publications, presentations to professional organizations, leadership roles, teaching excellence, awards, and other successes that might provide evidence of qualification for doctoral study.
