Campus Computing NewsBy Dr. Maurice Leatherbury, Senior Director of Academic ComputingNew Virus Protection Software Is Ready for InstallationThe Network Associates' VirusScan (formerly McAfee VirusScan) virus protection software package has been obtained and may be installed on campus machines, although we're still waiting to receive the Macintosh version (see last month's article for details on its selection as our preferred virus package). Network managers will be installing it on campus machines so you probably won't have to do anything to get it put on your own machine on campus, and Academic Computing Services is in the process of creating a new Internet Services CD-ROM that will include the VirusScan software. We expect the CD-ROM to be available early in the fall semester. You should be able to purchase it (for about $10) in the Bookstore and install VirusScan on your home machine free of charge. Windows 98 on New Microcomputer Maintenance Service MachinesWindows 98 will soon be an option that will appear on Microcomputer Maintenance Service's order form for purchase with new machines. Currently, computer support managers around campus do not recommend a wide scale conversion of existing computers to Microsoft's latest operating system, but support for various new hardware features on computers that MMS is now distributing makes Win98 the preferred operating system for new machines. The Win98 option, of course, isn't applicable to those areas on campus that use Windows NT. Every effort is being made to make the change to the new operating system as transparent to end users as possible, but if you're lucky enough to get one of the screamingly-fast new machines that MMS is now selling, you may well find yourself looking at a slightly different user interface than you're accustomed to seeing. New HelpDesk HoursEffective the first class day of the fall semester (August 31, 1998), the UNT Computing Center HelpDesk in ISB 119 (940-565-2324) will be open for business the following hours:
These changes should help to accommodate those attending classes on Saturday mornings who need to conduct business at the HelpDesk, as well as provide phone support those working on projects during the weekend. New Telecommunications Manager HiredLeslie Bowden has been selected as UNT's Telecommunications Manager and will be starting her job with us on August 19th. Ms. Bowden comes to us from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School at Dallas, where she was responsible for administering the installation and operation of their phone system. She has eighteen years experience in telecommunications, including stints with large banking systems, consulting firms, and with AT&T.n |
