GroupWise E-Mail Issues

By Claudia Lynch, Benchmarks Editor

There have been a couple of issues come up lately with regard to GroupWise usage. One issue is the use of GroupWise's "UNT Everyone" List, and the other is loss of messages due to automatic deletion.

The Everyone List

Allen Bradley, Campus Wide Networks Manager, and his staff have come up with a Web page designed to answer the most frequently asked questions concerning the use of the GroupWise "UNT Everyone" List. This address group has become a very popular way to attract the attention of ALL E-Mail users and has also drawn a lot of comments and complaints, particularly in the recent past. The page can be found at http://www.unt.edu/cwn/gw/everyoneFAQ.html . Questions answered are:

  1. What is it & who's in it?
  2. Can I be removed from it?
  3. What if I don't want to receive that mail?
  4. Why does my name show up in the blind copy area?
  5. What are my reply options?
  6. Are there any other options for mass communication?

The last item, #6, explains many of the alternatives presently being evaluated. A new "proper use" policy is being prepared, but is dependent on the outcome of these evaluations. Bradley is asking for your comments (via E-Mail) on any of these items and invites you to browse the Campus Wide Networks home page for other items of interest as well.

Automatic Deletion of GroupWise Mail

According to Randy Galloway, who is in charge of GroupWise core technologies, there has been a large number of GroupWise users requesting that their E-Mail be restored lately. Any mail older than 180 days is automatically deleted each day, so please remember to archive, save and/or print any mail you want to keep longer than the 180 day limit. This is very important because it is often not possible to restore older E-Mail. This 180 day limit applies to all folders, sent mail, inbox etc. Only the mail you archive will not be affected. If you have any problem using the archive feature, please contact either your network manager or Galloway. n
