New Internet Software CD-ROM ComingBy Dr. Ty Young, UNIX Systems AdministratorAfter much anticipation, UNT's Academic Computing Services (a division of the Computing Center) is poised to release a new, updated version of its overwhelmingly successful Dial-up Software CD-ROM, for sale at the UNT Bookstore's Software Dept. for $10.00. Key features of the new release include:
In addition, users will find the same easy-to-use Account Setup program for getting their home computers connected to the Internet, which includes the installation of Netscape Communicator and a new version of the Computing Center's officially-supported E-mail software package, Simeon. Also on the CD-ROM, for Windows platforms only, is a Computer-Based Training package from cbt systems, inc. designed to help those new to the Internet become more comfortable browsing the World Wide Web, sending and receiving E-mail, etc. We've also refined the CD-ROM's documentation to be more succinct and easy to understand. For example, we discovered that the previous version of the CD-ROM wouldn't work properly with Apple Computer, Inc.'s iMac computer, owing to an issue with the iMac's built-in networking software. On the new CD-ROM, however, we included explicit instructions for configuring both the iMac and MacOS-compatible machines running MacOS 8.5.x or higher. The new software is also tested on Windows 98 and Windows NT 4.0 workstation, but the Netscape Account Setup software especially is extremely memory-hungry. We'd recommend a minimum of 32 megabytes of memory on any the supported operating systems (Windows 3.x, 95/98, NT 4.0, and MacOS.) The CD-ROM, "Internet Software Suite Version 3.0," will be available at the UNT Bookstore by Friday, 22 January 1999 for $10.00 (which covers only the duplication costs, so no refunds will be issued.)
