The University of North Texas is home to the first health psychology behavioral medicine program. The Health Psychology Behavioral Medicine doctoral program began in 1978 as a joint effort between the UNT-Denton and UNT-Health Science Center faculty members. The then infant program was entitled Clinical Ecology and Behavioral Medicine, which coincided with
the research of several faculty members in toxicology. Shortly thereafter, the program adopted a new name, which it still holds today - Health Psychology and Behavioral Medicine.
Today, the UNT Health Psychology Behavioral Medicine Program strives to excel in both the areas of clinical and research. In 2004, APA accredited the program with the
highest honor of 7 years, and called the program "a training model that will become a model for others to follow."
