Statement of Research:
Intellectual access to art images is but a small piece of the much larger problem of intellectual access to new formats of information. As more and more information becomes available in digital formats, it is imperative that we understand how people get to and use images. The number of art images available on the World Wide Web is growing exponentially but needed image retrieval terminology and image search software for the Web are developing slowly.
Expected results include support for the need of improved browsing tools, image manipulation software, feedback mechanisms, query analysis and the role of user evaluation in retrieval. The citizens of Texas will be served by the application of this study in the design of better interfaces and search mechanisms for viewing and identifying digital art images. Museums in Texas may directly apply the results to the development of virtual exhibits and educational experiences.
