Overview:
Counseling services are provided to currently enrolled UNT students who are experiencing difficulties in personal or situational problems that might interfere with their academic success, ability to remain at the university, personal development or wellness, and quality of life.  Here are a few examples of common issues that students receive help for at the counseling center.

Academic and other adjustment problems,   Test anxiety    Career indecision     Difficulty choosing a major    Relationship problems      Assault, Sexual Assault,or Trauma,      Grief or Loss   Coping and high stress issues       Family conflict    Major-life changes of many kinds,     Depression,        Thoughts of suicide, Hopelessness,        Anxiety and Worry,         Eating disorders,      Motivation problems,       Difficulty making decisions       Cultural adjustment  Anger management,     Alcohol and Drug problems,   and many other issues.

Psychological Tests and Assessments:  Counselors sometimes use these as tools to help students.  If counselors thinks it may be helpful, they will discuss it with you. There is a minimal charge for certain assessment tools.

Confidentiality:  Counseling is a very personal endeavor, and we respect privacy and confidentiality to the extent that the law allows.    If you have any questions about this, please ask.  As with all health related services nationally, HIPAA documentations about our policy/procedures and disclosures must now be signed

Costs/fee for service:  Since we are supported by the "Student Service Fee", at this time we do not charge for the services, except minimal costs for some specific assessment instruments, and some workshop/classes.

Medical referral & medication management: The staff at Counseling & Testing Services work closely together with the staff of the Student Health Services (as well as off-campus health professionals) for the mutual benefit of the student, with the individual client's permission.  For some clients, medication is a very beneficial part of the overall treatment process, and referral for an medication evaluation will be made when it is suspected that it might prove helpful.  Other related health issues will also be referred to the health center or client's physician.

Limitations of Services:  The counseling center is focused on providing short-term counseling model and help to students with issues that can benefit from this model.  Some psychiatric disorders may require treatment/monitoring that is beyond the scope of what the counseling center can provide, and if this is the case, referral to appropriate agency/professionals will be provided.   If in doubt, or if you have questions, please contact us.

Session Limit: Students may receive up to 8 sessions per academic year, which starts in the fall semester.  Most students find this more than sufficient.    If sessions are missed or several sessions are cancelled, the student may lose an appointment time, and have to wait until another appointment can be scheduled. Without adequate notification, the missed sessions will count against the 8 session limit.

Referral Service & Information: When possible, we will try to help with finding referrals to other professionals on and off campus and to help in providing information about other university, community, and regional resources.

Responsibilities of the Student:  Students are expected to be prompt for appointments or call to cancel well in advance if they cannot make an appointment so other students have the opportunity to use our resources.   Students are expected to use counseling to their full ability, because any kind of change, growth, awareness, and benefit is contingent on the clients willingness to engage and work openly and honestly in the process of counseling.
