Types of Counseling
Listed are the types of counseling we provide at the Student Counseling Center.
Individual Counseling
Students meet individually with a counselor to talk about themselves, relationships, feelings, thoughts, and behaviors that concern them. The number of sessions any student is seen is determined by the counselor with the focus that is needed to reach the agreed upon goals, but not to exceed the eight maximum sessions per academic year. If the assessment reveals that the student needs more extensive, more frequent, or a professional with a particular expertise not found in the SCC staff, a referral will be recommended (see limitations in Scope of Service for more information).
Career Counseling (or help choosing a major)
While choosing a career is an ongoing and complicated process, it can be made much more manageable with counseling that helps students understand what information about oneself and the world of work is needed to make for a happy fit. Counselors may utilize a number of assessment instruments designed to help students understand important issues related to their career choice and help decide what to do next on the career decision making path. This, of course, includes choosing a major.
Couples Counseling
While counseling with couples often requires a time commitment beyond the scope of the Student Counseling Center's services, counselors can meet with student couples for an evaluation to see if the couple's issues are appropriate for short-term counseling. If not, we are happy to provide options and referrals when other services are more appropriate.
Group Counseling
Students with common concerns meet as a group with one or two counselors. This provides a helpful environment in which to explore issues and grow. All students must be screened before being referred to a group to make sure that it is a good match for both the student and the group. Many groups are run for a set starting date and number of meetings. Confidentiality: Every member must be willing to sign a promise to hold all information shared in the group as confidential and private. What is said in group must stay in the group. Group meetings do not count against your counseling session limit. Please see the Groups page for current and future offerings and specification about the group.
