CLEP General Information

CLEP (College Level Exam Program) examinations are administered in the Gateway Center, Room 140 and scored immediately, except for tests requiring an essay.  Official results are received approximately 2-3 weeks following the exam.  Detailed descriptions of all exams and suggestions for preparation can be found at http://www.collegeboard.com.

UNT is an open test center.  You do not have to be a UNT student to take a CLEP exam.  It is your responsibility to ensure credit is granted for each CLEP taken, which can be worked out with an advisor prior to your desired test date.    If you are seeking credit from another college or university, you should check that institution’s CLEP policy before testing.  If you are taking a CLEP with an essay for another school, please determine whether or not your institution wishes to grade the essay itself before coming in to test.  If your institution wishes to grade the essay, please bring the address your institution would like the essay mailed to the day of your test.  Also, please show up no later than 3:00pm if you are taking an test with an essay, as such tests take twice as long as standard tests.

Each exam is multiple choice and 90 minutes in length.  Some exams require an essay that is an additional 90 minutes in length, however UNT currently doesn't accept any CLEPs which require essays.

  CLEP Registration Information

CLEP registration need not be completed in advance of your desired test date.  We are on a walk-in basis only.   To register, you must show up in person at the Gateway Center, Room 140 on one of our testing days.  Test days are Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays between the hours of 8am and 3pm.  There is a $20.00 registration fee payable in cash or money order to UNT required at the time of registration.  In addition to the $20.00, there is a separate $70.00 test fee payable by credit card, check, or money order (made out to CLEP) also required at the time of registration.  Exams requiring an optional essay cost an additional $10.00, and it may take up to 10 business days after your initial registration before the essay form can be ordered.  All fees are nonrefundable.

Testing Schedule

The CLEP is given on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday every week.  Show up between 8am and 3pm on one of these testing days, excluding holidays and unexpected closings.  Please contact Counseling and Testing Services at (940) 369-7617 to ensure the exam is being given on the date you plan to test.

You must bring your photo ID (Driver's license or Passport, NOT a student ID) on the day of the exam.

 CLEP Score Reports

You must submit your score report to the Admissions office of the recipient institution.  There may be an additional form that needs to be completed to petition for credit.  Credit will be granted based on scores set by the institution.

Please contact Testing Services in the Gateway Center at (940) 369-7617 for more information.
