The delivery of the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign
Language) test has recently changed from CBT (Computer-Based Test) to iBT
(Internet-based Test) as of September 15th 2005. Unfortunately, this means
that the TOEFL can be given much less frequently than it used to.
Furthermore, in addition to the traditional reading, writing, and listening
sections, testers must now complete a spoken portion as well. Despite
this change, the new test is very similar to the original TOEFL in many
respects, and it still costs $140. It is recommended that you sign up
at least one month in advance in order to secure a test day, but you MUST
sign up at least 7 days prior to the exam date.
What's new with the TOEFL iBT?
Tests are given less frequently (only a few times per
month, not every day)
Tests are 30 minutes longer than the traditional TOEFL
(maximum of 4.5 hours)
There is now a speaking section which records the
testers responses using a microphone
Emphasis on using a combination of skills (for example,
some questions will require reading, listening, then spoken responses)
There are now 2 essays
Scratch paper is provided for the entire test
In addition to receiving scores in the mail, testers
can now also view their scores online 3 weeks after testing
