However, anthropology may be taken as a minor on the master's degree and as supporting work on the doctorate. Research Faculty in the Institute of Anthropology are engaged in research on various aspects of human culture, culture change and urban anthropology. The program cooperates with the Department of Geography and the Department of Biological Sciences for instruction, service and research in areas of archaeology and forensic anthropology. Research Applied research projects and program evaluation studies are conducted by the Institute of Criminal Justice. The institute's current research programs and interests focus on the effectiveness of electronic home confinement, evaluation of criteria used in alternative sentencing, development of prototype DWI pre-sentencing plans, investigation of patterns in homicide victimization, the impact of AIDS on vice and the effects of substance abuse on crime. Major funding sources for these research and evaluation projects are the National Center on Institutions and Alternatives, the Governor's Office of Criminal Justice for the State of Texas and various other regional, state and local agencies. Degree Program Professionals interested in advancing their careers in law enforcement or corrections and students anticipating careers in these areas should consider the Master of Science with a major in interdisciplinary studies. Reed, Director The Institute of Emergency Administration and Planning offers an undergraduate program (see the Undergraduate Catalog for description). The faculty of the institute is engaged in research regarding preparedness for hazardous materials transportation emergencies and human response to emergencies and disaster. The institute also is involved in assisting in the development and study of community emergency and disaster plans, and in completing hazards analysis evaluations.
