The School of Community Service has filed a reorganization plan with the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board to change the way academic units are named and organized within the school. This change has been made because of the growth of these academic programs and to make it easier for students to find these units in university publications. Proposed changes submitted are reflected in the School of Community Service section of this catalog.

Research

Applied research projects and program evaluation studies are conducted by the Department of Criminal Justice. The department's current research programs and interests focus on the effectiveness of electronic home confinement, evaluation of criteria used in alternative sentencing, development of prototype DWI pre-sentencing plans, investigation of patterns in homicide victimization, the impact of AIDS on vice and the effects of substance abuse on crime.

Major funding sources for these research and evaluation projects are the National Center on Institutions and Alternatives, the Governor's Office of Criminal Justice for the State of Texas and various other regional, state and local agencies.

Degree Programs

Professionals interested in advancing their careers in law enforcement or corrections and students anticipating careers in these areas should consider the Master of Science with a major in interdisciplinary studies. This program permits great flexibility in meeting the student's specific career interests. (See the Toulouse School of Graduate Studies section in this catalog.)
