College Music Folding Key

1. On any one instrument or voice.

2. Satisfies University Core Curriculum requirement, visual and performing arts.

3. Music elective to be chosen from MUAG 3240, Techniques of Piano Accompanying; MUCP 4330, Senior Theory Orchestration; MUCP 4340, Senior Theory Composition; MUCP 4510, Contemporary Music; or MUED 4490, Comprehensive Musicianship.

4. Understanding of Ideas and Values: Student must complete one course per group from any two of the following three groups: I. Social Sciences and Philosophy; II. Crosscultural and Global Studies (recommended: MUET 3030, Music Cultures of the World); III. Diversity in the United States (recommended; MUET 3020, Popular Music in American Culture). See "University Core Curriculum Requirements" in the Academics section of this catalog for a list of approved courses.

5. Any MUAS instrument or voice.

6. Any MULB Music Laboratory (choral laboratory recommended).

7. Contact the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures for proper placement into the appropriate level. Must either be proficient through freshman level or complete LANG 1010 (4) and 1020 (4) before starting LANG 2040 and 2050.

8. Three semester hours of electives to be selected from MUTH 3410, Sixteenth-Century Counterpoint; MUTH 3520, Harmonic Analysis; MUCP 4330, Senior Theory Orchestration; MUCP 4510, Contemporary Music; or MUED 4490, Comprehensive Musicianship.

9. Music History elective to be chosen from MUMH 4050, Symphonic Literature; MUMH 4070, Operatic Literature; MUMH 4750, Concerto Literature; MUMH 4760, Chamber Music Literature; MUMH 4770, Masterpieces of Choral Literature; or MUMH 4780, American Music.

10. After piano proficiency is passed, voice is recommended.

11. Choral laboratory is recommended.

18. LANG 1010 and 1020, Elementary Italian, may be substituted for FREN or GERM 2040 and 2050, Intermediate French or German.

20. Also may include MUAS (1000 level) taken for one credit hour per semester. Violin, viola, cello and double bass majors also take two additional hours of MUAS secondary string.

21. MULB 1805, Orchestra; MULB 1806, Wind Ensemble; MULB 1807, Symphonic Band; MULB 1812 Marching Band; or MULB 1813, Concert Band.

22. MUCM 3510, String Chamber Music; MUCM 3520, Woodwind Chamber Music; MUCM 3530, Brass Chamber Music; or MUCM 3540, Percussion Chamber Music. Percussion majors may use MUEN 2617, Percussion Ensembles. Harp majors may use MUEN 2630, Harp Ensembles, and Guitar majors may use MUEN 2621, String Ensembles, but may need additional advanced hours.

23. Some instrumental divisions offer this course only in the summer.

25. Wind and percussion concentrations take three semesters of MULB 1812, Marching Band (fall semester).

26. Students will choose seven hours from these Applied Music Techniques areas (MUAG): Brass (1102-1202), Classroom Instruments (1103), Diction (1905, 1906, 1907, 1909), Percussion (1117), Strings (1121-1221), Voice (1224), Woodwinds (1125-1225). Student will take only one class in the applied concentration area unless by elective (e.g., trumpet concentrations will take low brass class only, voice concentrations will not take voice class). Instrumental concentrations must take voice, class, voice (choral) concentrations must take two hours of instrumental classes and all diction courses and classroom instruments.

28. Any MULB Music Laboratory (four must be band, orchestra or choir).

29. PHED 1000, Principles and Practices of Health Fitness (2 hours); DANC 1100, Stress Reduction Through Movement (3 hours); PSYC 2580, Health Psychology (3 hours); or SMHM 1450, Principles of Nutrition (3 hours). Two hours (maximum) of wellness courses will count toward degree.
