Dell and Apple are the centrally-supported manufacturers of desktop and laptop computers on campus. UNT's Computing and Information Technology Center (CITC) and Purchasing & Payment Services (PPS) have coordinated the purchasing and maintenance processes for Dell computers to make the selection, purchase, and support of these computers as simple as possible.
The Distributed Computer Support Management Team (DCSMT) has specified Apple and Dell models (desktops and laptops) that meet the current minimum standards for use on the UNT network and represent the best long-term value to the university. The recommended systems are intended to serve users' needs for at least four years, which is generally the minimum time period that UNT departments expect to keep each desktop computer. In addition, the recommended Dell systems are compatible with the latest version of the Windows operating system, "Vista," which requires higher computing power than Windows XP.
If you wish to purchase a Dell computer or any other Dell product for personal use, take advantage of the special discounts offered to UNT students, faculty, and staff through the Dell University Program. Access is also available from the CITC Help Desk website via the "Dell Education Sales" link.
Dell has established two special websites for UNT institutional purchases, accessible via http://premier.dell.com. One website is established for acquisitions via UNT Purchase Order, and the other website facilitates acquisitions via the UNT P-Card credit card. All Dell products, including the standard computer configurations recommended by DCSMT, are available from both websites. (Do not order equipment for UNT with a personal credit card and seek reimbursement.) To gain access to UNT Dell Premier, request an account and password from CITC's Brenda Kirk.
Dell products purchased with a UNT Purchase Order (ePro Requisition) must be shipped to Central Receiving. Products ordered via P-Card must be shipped directly to the department. Most departmental addresses are available on Dell Premier; to request additional addresses contact CITC's Susan Pierce.

Obtaining Service on Dell Desktop and Laptop Computers
The CITC Microcomputer Maintenance Shop (MMS) provides warranty service for UNT-owned Dell desktop and laptop computers. To obtain service, first contact your college/department computer support group to help determine if the problem is hardware-related. If so, contact MMS at 940-565-2387 for assistance. MMS will dispatch a technician to the site where the machine is located and will initiate repairs on it. MMS stocks common spare parts for models recommended by DCSMT, and complete systems may be available for use if repairs cannot be accomplished quickly.
