Forensic Quiz Answers

The answers to these questions can also be found in the criminalistics certificate program at UNT.

This photo depicts two bullet holes in safety glass. Which hole was created first?

The hole on the right was created first. Cracks radiating out from the hole will stop when they encounter another crack. Stress placed on the glass (causing it to crack) will be transferred along the existing crack rather than accross it. Basic principles of physical science allow criminalists to reconstruct events in time order.

Professor Hueske's Introduction to Criminalistics teaches basic physical principles and their relevance to investigations.

What does this photo depict?

This view of a shoe print is almost invisible without oblique lighting. A lamp placed to the side creates shadows that given releif to the patterns in the sand.

Professor Hueske's Advanced Criminalistics I teaches detailed investigation and forensic techniques like footwear identification.

What is wrong with this photo? Why can't it be entered into evidence?

The photo has been altered. The criminalist holding the gun has a wedding ring and wrist watch. These are typically worn on the left hand. When the photo was flipped (as if the negative was reversed) these items appear to move to the right hand. These manufacturer's marks should be visible when the gun is gripped with the right hand.

If fine details of digital evidence interest you, you should consider taking Dr. Loper's Computer Crime Course (Graduate Students can take Cybercrime and Digital Forensics for real world examples and industry standard software tools.)

Can you identify the owner of this print?

Professor Hueske's Advanced Criminalistics II teaches latent print investigation and other advanced forensic techniques. Like many examples in class, this is Professor's Hueske's print.
