Ashley G. Blackburn, Ph.D.
Biographical Sketch
Dr. Blackburn is an Assistant Professor and the Internship Coordinator in the Department of Criminal Justice at the University of North Texas. She earned a B.A. in Criminal Justice (2000) and an M.A. in Criminal Justice and Criminology (2002) from Sam Houston State University. She completed her Doctoral dissertation on sexual assault perceptions among female inmates and earned a Ph.D. in Criminal Justice from Sam Houston State University in December 2006.
Dr. Blackburn has published on issues concerning international juvenile justice, the rights of victims and co-victims in capital cases, correlates of violent juvenile delinquency, and gender differences among delinquent populations. She is currently working on research projects pertaining to in-prison sexual assault, violent behavior among incarcerated women, same-sex domestic violence, and differences among victims of homicide.
In 2004, Dr. Blackburn spent seven months studying at the University of Lausanne in Switzerland and collaborated on the Violence experienced by women in Switzerland over their lifespan: Results of the International Violence against Women Survey (IVAWS). For four years while in Huntsville, TX she was a volunteer for the Sexual Abuse and Assault Free Environment (SAAFE) House’s Violence Intervention Project.. Dr. Blackburn has also joined the volunteer program at Denton County's Friends of the Family.
Dr. Blackburn regularly teaches Criminology; Drugs, Crime, and Society; Ethical Issues in Criminal Justice; Research Methods in Criminal Justice; Juvenile Delinquency; Institutional Corrections; Advanced Criminology; Seminar in Victimology; Criminals and Substance Abuse; and Comparative Criminal Justice Systems.
