Wireless Connectivity and Security
Bill Buntain announced that data communications team is developing a strategy for supporting wireless connectivity for areas/functions that include classrooms, public areas, meetings, laptop notebooks,  for staff who require mobility, and visitors.   The strategy is intended to minimize the work required to grant user access and client software distribution; enabling any 802.11b end-user device; enabling higher security in areas desired; and to identify a robust platform for central support.  Data Communications will be evaluating several components that will be required to run the system.  Contact Rory Rivoire for more information about hardware.

Adding Devices to UNT-NET
Bill announced that the Communications Planning Group is drafting a new policy that addresses the addition of devices and services that cause security holes and degrade performance on UNT-NET.  The draft includes a list of approved devices that will not require individual approval, also includes a list devices that may have stipulated limitations and/or configuration requirements.  Devices that are not on the list will require a written request for approval that will be reviewed by Network and Communications Services.  The policy draft will be passed to the Information Resources Council at the next meeting.
