Subcommittee Reports
Office XP Study Committee
Mike Williams reported that compatibility testing is running smoothly and that no problems have been experienced.Student Computing Committee
Elizabeth Hinkle-Turner reported that the Student Computing Committee reconvened to discuss the Students in the Tree and ZenWorks.Mac OS X Support Group
Jason Gutierrez announced that the Mac OS X Support Group met before Christmas break. Mac OS X is currently being supported by the Helpdesk, the ABN support group and a few others. Native OS X apps include Adobe Illustrator X and Virex7 (see Jason for a list of other native OS X apps). An on-line discussion group and a list-serve have been created, and, the group is moving towards using E-Directory. No printing problems have occurred. Anyone interested in an account should send e-mail to Jason.
System Outage Reporting
Sandy Burke announced that a request has been made from the
Information Resources Council to provide a bulletin board that will
announce information about system outages. The Remedy System, with slight
modifications in structure and data input, can provide the type of
sanitized information that is being requested. Remedy tickets that
announce campus-wide outages, planned outages, and resolved tickets will
be viewable.
Second-Level Linux (etc.) Support
Allen Bradley announced that the Campus-Wide Networks team plans to
provide second-level support and training for various Unix
flavors. The training will be geared towards network managers
and system administrators who need support. The first training session is
scheduled for February 21, 2002 ( RSVP to Travis Brown). Maurice
announced that a sub-committee will be formed to discuss support
issues. DCSMT members should let Maurice know if they would
like to serve on the study committee.
Wireless Connectivity and Security
Bill Buntain announced that data communications team is developing a
strategy for supporting wireless connectivity for areas/functions that
include classrooms, public areas, meetings, laptop notebooks, for
staff who require mobility, and visitors. The strategy is
intended to minimize the work required to grant user access and client
software distribution; enabling any 802.11b end-user device; enabling
higher security in areas desired; and to identify a robust platform for
central support. Data Communications will be evaluating several
components that will be required to run the system. Contact Rory
Rivoire for more information about hardware.
Adding Devices to UNT-NET
Bill announced that the Communications Planning Group is drafting a
new policy that addresses the addition of devices and services that cause
security holes and degrade performance on UNT-NET. The draft
includes a list of approved devices that will not require individual
approval, also includes a list devices that may have stipulated
limitations and/or configuration requirements. Devices that are not
on the list will require a written request for approval that will be
reviewed by Network and Communications Services. The policy draft
will be passed to the Information Resources Council at the next meeting.
Old Business
None.
New Business
Mike Hatch announced that he's been experiencing problems with ZenWorks 3.2.
Mike Wright announced that a new eighteen month Adobe contract went into effect today. Network managers should use the new spreadsheet to submit orders.

Brenda Kirk announced that the software volume has run out of space. A new server has arrived and will be brought on line in a few weeks.
Maurice announced that the Alliance for Higher Education will no longer manage the gigapop. Support may be worked out through members. UT Dallas may assume management responsibilities.
The meeting adjourned at 11:45 a.m.
