CAMPUS-WIDE NAMING CONVENTION FOR OBJECTS DEFINED IN THE AD/EXCHANGE SYSTEM(S)

DCSMT held a special meeting to discuss a naming convention for Active Directory objects and groups. Craig Terrell discussed the fact that there were a number of objects in AD that had generic names which made it difficult to identify the dpartmental association of the object. Curry Searle described the schema that CAS uses for naming objects which includes CAS as the primary identifier and up to two other identifying levels separated by a hyphen (-). It was decided to use an up-to three-level schema to show the area associate with an object, the type of object, and a name or identifier for the object. As much as possible, the initial identifier should correspond or be associatable with the support organziation schema built into AD and Exchange.

DNS operation with Active Directory was discussed and despite a few limitations to the current configuration, it was decided to maintain that configuration for now while UNT gains more experience with operating Active Directory.

Nassos Galiopoulos suggested that an online forum for discussion of such issues be established. Craig Terrell said that would be possible once the Directory Services group web site was operational.

ADJOURNMENT

The meeting was adjourned at 3:00 p.m.
