APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Minutes from February 17, 2012, were approved as written.
WINDOWS RDP VULNERABILITY
Rich Anderson (ITSS IT Security) spoke about a recently announced Microsoft Windows RDP vulnerability for which exploit code has been found online. He explained that possible responses included blocking the RDP port at the network edge firewall which could be disruptive to operations, or to put a new network intrusion protection system in place before it is fully tested. The IPS system can detect the signature of an exploit attempt and drop the connection. Some areas noted legitimate needs for RDP access. It was pointed out that the campus VPN can support RDP access if the port is blocked. Managers asked IT security to provide a list of IP addresses with the RDP port open so that they can assess systems on their networks. IT Security agreed to update the managers as additional information is available or other actions are pending.
Matt Treanor from CDW introduced himself and inside sales representative Mike Randolph. Matt provided an overview of the CDW product catalogs as well as some of the professional services they can offer.
SPF IMPLEMENTATION FOR UNT MAIL ROUTING
Bahram Paiani (ITSS Messaging) discussed the issue of e-mail address spoofing and proposed implementation of Sender Policy Framework (SPF) for the UNT network to help block mail with spoofed unt.edu addresses. SPF is already implemented for the untsystem.edu domain. Implementing SPF will prevent spoofed mail from bouncing back to UNT's mail router, leading to a decrease in such unproductive e-mail traffic.
Yancey Yeargan introduced a new Directory Services Tools server that provide a set of utilities for managers to update and access elements of directory information. Efforts are underway to provide documentation for the directory service attributes and the utility functions available via the tools server.
Philip Baczewski reported that a kickoff meeting had been held regarding Cloud Storage issues and that faculty requirements for Dropbox.com, services of Box.com, and internal cloud services were all being examined.
Krysta Berry announced upgrades to switches in Chestnut Hall and said that the Tennis Center and Recreational Sports remain to be upgraded.
Jason Gutierrez provided an update on the Microsoft Lync pilot project and stated that it should be ready by the end of the spring term. Lync will replace the functionality of Office Communicator. He also mentioned that the Apple Technical Support contract was allowed to expire because of a lack of activity.
The meeting was adjourned at 11:22 a.m. The next meeting is scheduled for April 6, 2012.
