Q. What is the Emergency Administration and Planning Program?

A. The Emergency Administration and Planning Program is an appendage of the Department of Public Administration in the School of Community Service at the University of North Texas. Founded in 1983, this program was the first of its kind in the United States to offer a Bachelor’s of Science in Emergency Management.

Q. What is emergency management?

A. Emergency management is a profession in governments, businesses and non-profit organizations that seeks to prevent, prepare for, respond to, and recover from disaster.

Q. What kinds of careers are available in emergency management?

A. Because of recent natural and technological disasters, employment opportunities in emergency management continue to grow and diversify. Job titles include Emergency Managers, FEMA Program Analysts, Business Continuity Specialists, Risk Managers, Hospital Disaster Planners, International Relief Workers, Red Cross Emergency Services Directors, etc. Major employers include the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the American Red Cross, large corporations, and local and state governments. Employment opportunities are also available with police, fire, and public works departments, as well as other federal agencies (the Environmental Protection Agency, the Department of Transportation, the Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance, the Department of Defense, etc.).

Q. What are the requirements for the B.S. degree?

A. The Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Emergency Administration and Planning provides strong general education as well as theoretical grounding and technical training in the field of emergency management. Requirements are as follows:

University Core Curriculum 47 hours
University Free Electives 21 hours
Minor 18 hours (6 must be advanced)
Major Required Courses 18-24 hours
Major Elective Courses  18-24 hours
Internship (for those with no prior professional experience in the field).

Q. What are the requirements for this major if I am looking for a second degree?

A. As long as you meet the University’s Core Curriculum and Free Elective Requirements, you will only need to meet the Major and Electives for the Major requirements to obtain a Bachelor’s of Science in Emergency Administration and Planning.


Q. What if I want to transfer to the University of North Texas from another school?

A. Credits from other accredited schools can be transferred into the University of North Texas if they meet and are similar to the requirements for the University of North Texas.

Q. Who can I contact to see if my credits will transfer?

A. Information about transferring credits from other universities can be obtained by contacting the Academic Advisor for the Emergency Administration and Planning Program,  Lynne Brister-Cox .  She can be reached at (940)565-4115.  Her office is located in Chilton Hall 289.

A. The Emergency Administration and Planning Program offers several interdisciplinary courses to prepare professionals for the public, private and non-profit sectors. Some of these courses include:

Q. Are internships required for all students?

A. Because employers desire work experience, internships are required for those students with no profession experience in emergency management. Students presently working in emergency management (or related fields) are waived of this requirement. Further information about internship requirements can be acquired by contacting the Interim Internship Coordinator, Amy Thompson, (940/565-2305).  Her office is located in WH 362.

Q. What minors are recommended?

A. Several minors are related to the Bachelor’s Degree in Emergency Administration and Planning. EADP students might want to consider tailoring their education to their career and educational goals by taking courses within a self-designed focus area. This may include a particular sector, specific functions, current concerns in the field, or other issues. Possibilities include Public Administration, Political Science, Business Computer Information Systems, Computer Science, Criminal Justice, Engineering Technology, Foreign Languages, Earth Sciences, Geology, Journalism, Management, and Sociology.
