International Emergency Management
Student Association (IEMSA)

IEMSA is the International Emergency Management Student Association. IEMSA was created by students at UNT interested in advancing the field of Emergency Management through the experience of practical education and the promotion of academic standards.  IEMSA is a valuable networking resource for both students and Alumni. We are an organization striving to unify the voice of Emergency Management students everywhere, currently consisting of four chapters: Arkansas Tech University, Central Missouri State University, Akron University, and the University of North Texas. Our international representative is actively working with other schools interested in starting IEMSA chapters in the near future. IEMSA events have included:

  • 8 hour HAZMAT Awareness Certification Class

  • Annual Party at the Lake

  • Incident Command School

  • Sky Warn Training

Although IEMSA is a professional organization, we like to have fun! Joining IEMSA is easy. Contact us through email at untiemsa@yahoo.com or speak with a professor or one of the officers and we will be glad to assist you.

Greetings and welcome (back) to UNT for another great semester!  The International Emergency Management Student Association had an incredible fall semester with record-high membership.  We’re looking forward to breaking that number again this spring.  Last fall, IEMSA sponsored a number of really good opportunities for students to get additional training beneficial to the emergency management field.  These events included HAM Radio training, Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training, and the highlight of the semester: a trip to Orlando, FL for the annual IAEM Conference, where the group got to meet former-FEMA director, Michael Brown.  We also went camping for a weekend at Turner Falls in Oklahoma, and had a number of excellent guest speakers at several of our meetings.

This spring, IEMSA is ready to roll to take our members to an even bigger semester full of opportunities!  We started out the semester in an incredible way by hosting a talk with FEMA’s Director, R. David Paulison.  Director Paulison spoke on the problems and solutions to the response in New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina, the importance of personal preparedness, and his plans for a new FEMA.  He also answered many questions from students, faculty, and alumni.  It was an honor to have Director Paulison visit our university and get a first-hand look at our EADP program and IEMSA organization.

IEMSA is going to continue its commitment in helping its members gain applicable training by promoting SkyWarn Storm Spotter training on February 24th.  We are also organizing a trip to NOAA’s National Severe Weather Workshop in Norman, OK on March 1-3.

Also, IEMSA members and all EADP students at UNT have been given a tremendous opportunity this semester to take part in the first annual Emergency Management Association of Texas (EMAT) Preparedness and Response Symposium, being held at the Radisson right across from UNT on April 2-4!  This conference will give us a great chance to expand our emergency management experiences by teaching us about Relocation and Recovery, Grant Writing, All Hazards Planning and many more valuable topics.  As a bonus to IEMSA members, EMAT is giving us eight volunteer spots that will allow those volunteers to attend the conference for free!  For more information on the EMAT Conference or for volunteering info, please contact Brad Wilson (bradwilsonem@msn.com) or myself.

In addition, we’re planning an alumni picnic, another adventurous camping trip with a disaster trivia contest and great prizes, and meetings featuring incredible guest speakers!  We encourage everyone to come to our meetings and join IEMSA in order to take part in all the exciting events we have planned for this year.  Check out our website (www.untiemsa.org) and sign up for our Message Group (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/untiemsa/) for more information.  You can also contact any of the IEMSA officers at untiemsa@yahoo.com if you have any additional questions.  Have a great semester and we hope to see everyone at our next meeting!
