The Importance of a Minor

Because the bachelors of science in Emergency Administration and Planning requires a minor, students may ask themselves why this is necessary and what minor should be pursued.  The first question is simple:  those working in the field not only need a broad understanding of disaster management but also need additional knowledge that is pertinent to specific hazards, professions, and emergency operations functions.  The minor is therefore a crucial component of the EADP degree.  The second question is not easily addressed because it depends upon the student's interests and career objectives.  For instance, if a student is interested in working in the public sector, it would be advisable for him or her to minor in public administration.  If the student desires a job in the private sector, he or she may want to consider a minor in business.  Other minors, particularly geography, sociology, computer science, criminal justice and chemistry are also very good complements to the EADP major.
