Students To Earn Certification EADP has recently take two steps to enhance the program for those students seeking careers in the private sector. First, EADP has worked with the Disaster Recovery Institute International to identify qualified instructors for the Private Sector Issues course. Second, students will be able to take a test at the conclusion of EADP 4030 that, if passed, will lead to an Associate Business Continuity Planner certificate. This approach to the class will be initiated during the Spring 2003 semester. |

Students Learn from Disaster Experts On September 13, 2002, the Center for Public Management, Emergency Administration and Planning Program, and the International Emergency Management Student Association hosted “Disaster Education Day 2002.” The theme of the event was “The Future of Emergency Management.” Speakers came from a variety of sectors. Mr. Billy Zwerschke, the Past-President for the International Association of Emergency Managers (www.iaem.com) discussed the history of emergency management in the public sector. Daryl Spiewak, President-Elect of IAEM, spoke on the future of emergency management. Mr. Ben Taylor, President of the Disaster Recovery Institute (www.drii.org), spoke about the impacts of September 11th on the private sector. Mr. Rick Lohr, emergency manager of Somerset County in Pennsylvania, talked about the unique issues dealt with in his jurisdiction. In the past year, Somerset County managed the United Flight #93 on September 11th and the mine collapse of late July 2002. “The Importance of Regional Coordination of Emergency Management” panel provided an opportunity for emergency management professionals from around the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex to discuss the regional approach to emergency management. Darrell Toups from City of Garland, Bill Gross from the City of Dallas, City of Irving’s Pat McMacken, Fred Sebren from the North Texas Chapter of the Association of Contingency Planners, Gregg Dawson from the North Central Texas Council of Governments, and J.J. Jones from the City of Forth Worth all participated as panelists. Please look for the Fall 2003 edition of The Mitigator to learn about the upcoming Disaster Education Day. This year’s event is shaping up to be the best yet! Planning is being done for a multi-day event including lots of good information and a involvement from a number of different agencies. |
New Internship Requirements and Procedures Our Internship/Practicum courses have recently been restructured to further improve the internship experience for both students and hosts. EADP has introduced a more comprehensive internship preparation course (EADP 4800.001), which represents one half (3 credit hours) of the total 6-credit hour internship requirement. Topics covered in this preparatory course include career counseling, resume development, professionalism, and interviewing skills. EADP students who have completed Emergency Preparedness (EADP 3020), and approximately one-half of their major course work may register for the internship preparation course by first contacting our Internship Coordinator, Janay Tieken, for course approval. During EADP 4800.001 students will work with the Coordinator to arrange their internship. Following completion of EADP 4800.001, students will register for Internship Practicum (EADP 4800.002). Three hours of credit will be awarded for this practicum class when the student has completed 240 hours of internship and has turned in all required documentation. If you have any questions concerning internship requirements or procedures, please contact the Janay Tieken , Wooten Hall 169, jtieken@scs.cmm.unt.edu or phone 940/565-2305. |
