Emergency Administration
and Planning Program

Research

Bridging the gap between academics and practitioners is a top priority of the Emergency Administration and Planning Program. Consequently, EADP faculty interact frequently with professionals in emergency management to obtain important information about the state of the field, including the lessons from current disaster events and operations.

Research has been conducted on a variety of topics including hazard mitigation, emergency preparedness, disaster response, disaster recovery, multi-agency coordination, disaster vulnerability and sustainable development. Field studies have been (and are being) conducted on various disasters including the El Nino flooding in Peru, Hurricane Georges in the Dominican Republic, and the recent Tornadoes in Fort Worth, Texas.

Faculty publications have appeared in Disaster Prevention and Management; Journal of Environmental Management; Disasters, Sustainable Communities Review; the International Journal of Mass Emergencies and Disasters; The Prairie Geographers; Natural Hazards; and the Australian Journal of Emergency Management.

The faculty of the Emergency Administration and Planning Program have received various grants to fund their research interests. Much of this money has been funded by the National Science Foundation and has been distributed by the National Hazards Center at the University of Colorado. EADP faculty are in the process of applying for additional grants to ensure future academic endeavors.

Periodically EADP students may have the opportunity to assist professors with research projects.  Students have worked with professors to gather research materials on response coordination during the Fort Worth Tornado, administer surveys to 911 dispatch centers, and write papers on important topics in emergency management.
