Emergency Administration
and Planning Program

SCHOLARSHIPS/AWARDS

The EADP Program provides a scholarship and an award each year to exceptional students.

The Tom Joslin Memorial Scholarship provides up to $1000 of funding for tuition, to be broken in equal payments over the Fall and Spring semesters.

The John Maxwell Award for the Outstanding Student in Emergency Administration and Planning is awarded once each year during the University's 'Honors Day' ceremonies, to honor an EADP student who has distinguished himself/herself in the program.  This award carries a $150 stipend, which may be used toward tuition and fees.

In 2004, scores of IEMSA students from UNT participated in a strategic national stockpile exercise in the city of Denton and other jurisdictions around the Metroplex.  Because of the efforts of these IEMSA members, they were given over $4,000 from the federal government through the North Central Texas Council of Governments.  Money received has been designated for two scholarships:  the IEMSA Tuition Scholarship; and the IEMSA Travel Scholarship.

There are also UNT and external scholarship opportunities available, and those from emergency management organizations such as the International Association of Emergency Managers (IAEM), and the Emergency Management Association of Texas (EMAT), and the U.S. Dept. of Homeland Security.

Tom Joslin Memorial Scholarship
in Emergency Administration
and Planning

Up to $1,000 Award

Background
In 1994, friends and alumni of the Emergency Administration and Planning (EADP) program at the University of North Texas established the Tom Joslin Memorial Scholarship in honor of one of the program's early faculty members. Following a career with the Federal Emergency Management Agency, Mr. Joslin joined the UNT faculty and worked tirelessly until his death in 1993 to promote the EADP program and enhance the professionalization of emergency managers. Established as an endowed scholarship, the Tom Joslin Memorial Scholarship is annually given to carry forward his vision for the EADP program and profession. Interest from the endowment provides a scholarship for tuition and fees for undergraduate study at UNT. For 2001 - 2002, the award is up to $1,000 payable in two installments (1/2-amounts in both the fall and spring semesters). Under current state policies, the Joslin Scholar, if enrolled full-time, qualifies for in-state tuition.

Selection criteria

-- at least a sophomore at the time the award is made;
-- overall grade point average of 3.00 (including transfer work);
-- evidence of a commitment to a career in emergency management such as participation in appropriate professional development opportunities (seminars, workshops, professional meetings) and membership in relevant professional associations (such as the International Emergency Management Student Association);
-- ability to demonstrate leadership qualities and involvement in community service activities
-- completion of the Tom Joslin Memorial Scholarship Application form (available in the EADP Office, WH 367);
-- completion of an essay explaining (1) career interests and goals and (2) sources of funding for the applicant's undergraduate education, and (3) effect receipt of scholarship will have on completing your education at UNT;
-- two letters of reference from sources outside the EADP program, which may include employer or current/former teachers.

Applications deadline is March 1st of each year.

The Harry S. Truman Scholarship

http://www.truman.gov/

Students interested in this prestigious and competitive scholarship should meet with an EADP faculty advisor in their freshman and sophomore years for preparation guidance.

For more information, please contact Dr. James Duban, Office of Nationally Competitive Scholarships , Kendall Hall, Room 162;  940/565-2820

The Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation, established by Congress as the official federal memorial to honor the thirty-third president of the United States, is a permanent education scholarship program designed to provide opportunities for outstanding students to prepare for careers in public service.

Amount of grant: A Truman Scholarship provides up to $30,000. Scholars selected as juniors are eligible to receive $3,000 for the senior year of undergraduate education and $27,000 for graduate studies. Scholars in graduate programs planning to receive degrees in one to two years are eligible to receive $13,500 per year. Scholars in graduate programs requiring three or more years of academic study are eligible to receive $9,000 per year for a maximum of three years.

Up to eighty-five scholarships are awarded each year to students in their junior year with significant potential and demonstrated interest in a career in government at the federal, state, or local level. It is the intent of the foundation to renew scholarship awards for the senior year and for a period not to exceed two academic years of graduate study.  Each June all accredited U.S. colleges and universities are invited to nominate up to three students for the forthcoming year's scholarships. Up to three candidates may be nominated by their institution of higher education. Applications are not accepted directly from candidates.

Dates: Students wishing to be nominated by the UNT Screening Committee must submit completed applications by October 15 to the Faculty Screening Committee, c/o the Office of Postgraduate Fellowships, Chestnut Hall, 117. The university will submit its nominees by December 1.

Requirements: Nominees must be U.S. citizens and full-time students enrolled as college juniors. "Junior" here means a student who plans to continue full-time undergraduate study and who expects to receive a baccalaureate degree between December and August of the next academic year.

Nominees must be in the upper fourth of their class and have selected an undergraduate field of study that will permit admission to a graduate program leading to a career in public service. Applicants should have extensive records of public and community service. The Truman Scholarship is reserved for persons who have already participated extensively in community activities to serve others and perhaps have had internships or summer jobs with government agencies.

Candidates must have:

  • A GPA of 3.8 - 4.0;

  • Track records of volunteerism;

  • A history of leadership.  For purposes of the Truman Scholarship application, leadership is defined as encountering a situation that needs 'fixing' and working harmoniously with members of an organization to bring about constructive and beneficial change.  Leadership also implies working with members of the community, coordinating efforts, and delegating responsibility;

  • An experience working for some city/state/or federal agency, or political campaign.

  • A passionate commitment to work in the public sector (non-profit organizations; government or otherwise);

  • An interest in helping to forge public policy to influence either domestic or U.S. foreign policy.

All likely candidates should enroll in their sophomore year in either 'Public Policy' or 'Public Policy and Bureaucracy,' and undertake a disaster-relief and/or emergency management research project compatible with the 2-page policy statement on the Truman application.

All likely candidates should apply for the NT-DC Internship no later than the first semester of their junior year.  (NT-DC is coordinated by the Office of the Dean of Student DevelopmentContact Bonita Jacobs or Elizabeth With http://www.unt.edu/dsd/staff.html ).  Students should otherwise by channeled toward public-sector internships that relate directly to emergency management.
