RE:          LEADERSHIP TEXAS SCHOLARSHIP

I am pleased to announce the fifth annual competition for the Leadership Texas scholarship sponsored by the UNT Commission on the Status of Women and funded by the Office of the President. The selection process is facilitated by the Leadership Texas alumni of UNT. Leadership Texas is committed to encouraging women to excel in prominent leadership roles in the corporate, public and community sectors. Now entering its twentieth year, Leadership Texas provides women leaders with essential information, an awareness of ongoing changes, sharpened skills, and the initiative, where necessary, to rewrite the rules.

Each year approximately 100 women, who are leaders in their community and professions, are selected to participate in the program. They represent both rural and urban areas. They are corporate and nonprofit executives, educators, lawyers, allied health professionals, entrepreneurs, and elected officials, among others. UNT women who have previously participated in Leadership Texas are Mrs. Gloria Bahamon, Dr. Bertina Hildreth Combes, Dr. Suzanne LaBrecque, Dr. Kathleen Swigger, Dr. Sandra Terrell, Dr. Ruthanne Thomas, and Mrs. Fran Vick. The 2001 UNT Scholarship recipient was Dr. Diane Allen. The selection process is competitive and not all women who apply are accepted. Participants attend five three-day sessions throughout the year in various cities across the state. Sessions begin mid-morning Monday and continue through Wednesday.

All female full-time faculty and staff (professional, executive, and administrative) are eligible to apply. One applicant will be selected as the UNT nominee. Please forward application materials to Ms. Cassandra Berry in the Division of Equity and Diversity, Administration Building, Room 121. Members of the Leadership Texas alumni of UNT will review application materials and forward a nominee recommendation to my office. However, selection does not guarantee acceptance by the Leadership Texas 2002 program. Attached is the scholarship application. The deadline for submitting an application is Monday, September 3, 2001.

I strongly encourage all qualified women to apply for this opportunity by following the format attached to this letter.  For additional information, please contact the Commission’s liaison, Ms. Cassandra Berry at 940-565-2456, or information can be obtained from http://www.womensresources.org/lt.html
