Admission
Whether your graduate educational needs and interests are in management or music, education or engineering, studio art or audiology, or any of the more than 100 areas in which we offer graduate education, UNT has a place for you. You'll be enrolling in a student-centered public research university.
How to become a graduate student at UNT
To be admitted as a degree-seeking student, you must:
- Have a bachelor's degree or its equivalent from a regionally accredited institution.
- Have at least a 3.0 grade point average on the last 60 undergraduate credit hours prior to receiving a bachelor's degree, at least a 2.8 GPA on all undergraduate work, or at least a 3.4 GPA on work for any completed master's degree.*
- Submit an application for graduate admission to the Toulouse School of Graduate Studies with the required application fee of $50 (international students apply through the Office of International Admissions). Your application should be submitted at least two months prior to the semester of enrollment. You may apply online.
- Submit official transcripts from all colleges or universities attended. These should be submitted at least two months prior to the semester of enrollment.
- Submit standardized test scores (GRE, GMAT, MAT, etc.) to the Toulouse School of Graduate Studies.**
- Complete any other admissions requirements of the department offering the graduate degree program you want to pursue. These may include personal statements, letters of reference, entrance examinations, interviews, auditions, portfolios or other program-related materials. NOTE: Departmental programs may have earlier deadlines than those listed for graduate school admission. Consult with your department for details on requirements and deadlines.
To be admitted for teacher certification, a graduate academic certificate or a second bachelor's degree, or to enroll as a non-degree graduate student, *** you must complete items 1-4 above.
Only written notice from the dean of the Toulouse School of Graduate Studies constitutes admission acceptance. Correspondence with department chairs or faculty members does not imply admission to the graduate school.
Additional requirements for international students
If you are an international student, you must file an International Student Application for Admission with the Office of International Admissions and pay the $75 application fee at least six months before your planned enrollment date. The international application allows you to apply for graduate study. Apply online through Apply Texas.
Test scores and transcripts must be received by the Office of International Admissions at least 60 days before the enrollment date. Other requirements as listed in the graduate catalog (also available at www.international.unt.edu) must be met.
- * Students with lower GPAs may be eligible for admission under certain conditions or if they are seeking a second bachelor's degree. See the graduate catalog for details.
- ** Some programs will provisionally admit students who have not yet completed standardized tests. Some programs have requirements that substitute for test scores. Contact your department of interest or see the graduate catalog for more information.
- *** Apply as a non-degree student if you are only taking courses to improve your knowledge. Non-degree students may change to degree-seeking, although course credits might not transfer to your degree program. Contact the Toulouse School of Graduate Studies or see the graduate catalog for more information.
