The University of North Texas’ College of Business is one of the nation’s largest business schools. Our alumni are prominent scholars, administrators and professors at leading business schools, universities and research institutions.

The Doctor of Philosophy degree in Business prepares you for a career in academia. The curriculum includes course work on research methods and processes, statistical analyses, teaching methodology, and in-depth study in a specific business discipline. Students entering the Ph.D. program have varying academic and professional backgrounds. You are individually evaluated by our Degree Program Committee and an emphasis is designed to meet your particular needs and interests. Your studies can concentrate on:

Our program is a full-time, in-resident, research- based program, and our students are active members of the department through research and teaching responsibilities.

This distinction means we meet or exceed strict academic standards for excellence in education.

We have also developed the campus to reflect our commitment to prepare leaders for the future. The new 180,000-square-foot Business Leadership Building provides you with the highest level of academic instruction possible using cutting-edge technology and interactive learning environments.

Research resources

Our College of Business houses several research centers and institutes established in collaboration with local industry leaders. They provide forums for cross-fertilization of ideas among disciplines as well as research support for doctoral students. In addition, several collaborative initiatives strengthen industry and community relationships.

The Center for Decision and Information Technologies is a catalyst within the North Texas business community and beyond, through the sharing of knowledge, skills, innovative thinking in a mutually beneficial relationship. Utilizing member organizations as well as faculty and student expertise, the center focuses on information technology, quality, business continuity and security, continuous improvement, and decision-making techniques.

The Center for Logistics Education and Research facilitates the formulation and implementation of research and education necessary to produce effective strategies and qualified people to meet the rapidly changing knowledge demands.

The Institute of Petroleum Accounting researches and supports research in the accounting, finance, taxation and economic problems of the extractive industries. It publishes information about research activities of the institute and about current developments in the extractive industries through the Petroleum Accounting and Financial Management Journal.

The Murphy Center for Entrepreneurship promotes free enterprise through students, faculty and business partners via scholarships, leadership presentations, new business venture contests, internships and entrepreneurial awards.

Admission requirements

Admission to the doctoral program is competitive. This selectiveness allows close faculty-student working relationships and mentorships that are the program’s hallmarks.

The three-step process includes admission to the Toulouse Graduate School, admission to the College of Business and admission to the department of your concentration. A complete application requires:

  • an application fee along with transcripts
  • official GMAT/GRE scores
  • three letters of recommendation
  • statement of purpose
  • current vitae

Degree requirements

Requirements for the Ph.D. in Business consist of course work, satisfactory performance on the qualifying examinations, pre-dissertation research and dissertation research. The program requires a minimum of 69 semester hours of graduate credit beyond a master’s degree or 99 semester hours of graduate credit beyond the bachelor’s degree:

  • Research track (12 to 18 hours)
  • Major and minor areas (27 to 33 hours)
  • Pre-dissertation research (12 hours)
  • Dissertation (12 hours)

Student with only a bachelor's degree or a master's degree not containing courses equivalent to M.B.A. background courses must take additional courses as deficiencies outside the doctoral program.


Financial assistance

Assistantships, fellowships and other scholarships are available at the college and university levels. Awards are given to students on a competitive basis.

Many students are fully supported by their departments through scholarships and assistantships. This support gives you the opportunity to receive a waiver of out-of-state tuition. Information regarding assistantship positions, which are granted to outstanding students, can be obtained from the Ph.D. coordinator.

All financial aid is awarded on a competitive basis and is approved in consultation with the department chair and the appropriate departmental committee for recommendation to the Director of Ph.D. Programs and Research.

The College of Business Dean’s Scholarship provides $1,000 each year for three years to one full-time doctoral student in each Ph.D. discipline. This scholarship qualifies doctoral students to pay in-state tuition.
